Event date: 14 May 2022

On 14 May 2022, the Sunshine Coast legal profession gathered for the 8th annual Justin Crosby Memorial Bursary Dinner, hosted by the Sunshine Coast Law Association (SCLA).

The annual event is held to raise funds for a Bursary to honour the memory of Justin Crosby for his outstanding legal service to the Sunshine Coast community. The Bursary is open to all first-year Commonwealth supported students enrolled either full-time or part-time at the University of the Sunshine Coast Bachelor of Laws Program.

Krystal Sinn, the 2021 Recipient of the Bursary, spoke about her journey as a single mother studying law and the impact that the Bursary has had on her studies so far.

Travis Schultz, who was the MC for the evening was also surprised when he was awarded Life Member of the Sunshine Coast Law Association. The Life Member Award recognises a significant contribution by an SCLA member not just to the SCLA, but to the local legal and non-legal community. Travis has raised thousands of dollars for numerous Sunshine Coast charities, including most recently over $30,000 for the Suncoast Community Legal Service at a dinner he hosted in March 2022.

SCLA President Jessica Popple commented “how wonderful it was to have QLS President, Kara Thomson, CEO, Rolf Moses, Vice-President, Chloe Kopilovic, Immediate Past President Elizabeth Shearer, Past President Bruce Doyle and Councillors Samantha Bolton, Bridie Edwards, Sheetal Deo and Rebecca Pezzuti at this year’s event. The SCLA is so grateful to QLS for their support for this event, but also the DLA in general.”

On early calculations, it is estimated that the event has raised over $20,000 for the bursary fund. SCLA President, Jessica Popple said this could not have happened without the sponsors of the night, Herron Todd White, Pippa Colman & Associates Law Practice, Toomey Family Law, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, Sunshine Coast Barristers Chambers, Accord Mediation and the Queensland Law Society.
